a year in review…

Welp….this is it, the last day of 2018! I always spend the last few days of the year to review the year and make plans for the new year.

I must say HOLY COW what a year!!!

The first part of the year I prepped for opening business and moving to Arizona. I drove across country with my two cats in my car arriving to my new life on Valentine’s day.

I jumped right in full force, my first week here I photographed an intimate wedding in Northern Phoenix and and in home maternity session. As the year went on I worked on building a portfolio of adventure elopement and anniversary sessions to show clients just some of the amazing options for their wedding day. I met A LOT of new people in the industry and outside of the industry, got to know my new city, did some intense continued education within the industry, determined a style and a brand and traveled a lot. In between it all, I even launched a wedding dress rental program for all of my elopement and intimate wedding brides. The year was BUSY and not at all what I thought it would be, but does anything go as we plan???

If you have ever moved out of state you know that the first year is usually….odd. Lol. It is a year of adjustment, change, learning and reworking relationships. It was not a easy year at all for me emotionally and I must say I am very excited for a new year. I think 2018 was my year of change, growth, grounding and wonder. I am hoping 2019 will be my year of growth, blossoming and success. I am so grateful for the clients I had this year, the new friends I have made here in Arizona, to live somewhere with mountains and for supportive family and friends.

I’m also so blessed to have found the path within photography that I am extremely PASSIONATE about!! Graduating college with a BFA in Photography only 4.5 years ago I had no idea what I was going to do to with it. I knew I liked working with people and helping style photo shoots, but that was it. I went to work for an RV company photographing product to then a studio and golf photography job. While I loved my job and doing the work the all-around passion was missing. I truly think I have found my home in photography and couldn’t be more excited to go into the next year with further knowledge I gained this year to help couples pick a location for the elopement, help them plan, give them tips on awesome local vendors, be able to help them with a wedding dress if they’re eloping on a shorter time frame and document the most special day of their lives.

Cheers, ya’ll to 2019!

2018 Accomplishments:

I consider my first accomplishment of the year to be moving to Phoenix, Arizona. I can tell you first hand it really makes a huge difference to love where you live. Then would come the official launch of my business! I took a leap of faith and went from working at a commercial photography studio that mainly focused on golf to turning my focus to couple’s in the wild and photographing elopements!! I feel so honored to have been featured in my first year of business by Looks Like Film, Wandering Weddings, Tacari Weddings and interviewed by the Phoenix Voyage. I also launched a wedding dress rental program for all of my elopement brides!! I offer designer wedding dresses from size 0-10 that brides can select from without the time lines and stress of shopping at a store, not to mention saving closest space later. Of course, the overall achievement of surviving my first year in business.

Recently, I had the chance to do a mentorship with Ruthanne, a fellow elopement photographer, which brought me to the stunning views of Lake Tahoe! We took some time out of our grind on business talk to photograph this beautiful couple, Claire and Wilson! These two souls are madly in love with each other and prepping for their venture into Van Life. I could not get enough of their sweet giggles, admiration and that red hat!! I love their excitement to take photos together. I am always for couple’s pictures especially before any life change; who says you need to be engaged to enjoy each other and have beautiful images to show it!

This duo even opted in pose as a bride and groom. Claire slipped into one of my wedding dresses for rent for a some styled elopement images! Claire is wearing the ‘Death Valley’ dress designed by Monique Lhuillier. These beautiful flowers were provided by Love & Lupines Floral Design who are also based in Lake Tahoe. I’m head over heels for this bridal look with the red hat and feather, the sexy jeweled dress, romantic floral arrangement and let’s not forget all of those pines! If you’re thinking of eloping I can ensure you that it will be an experience you will never forget and stunning images to last a lifetime!

“Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass...It's about learning to dance in the rain.” - Vivian Greene

I met Jessica and Glen when I photographed their in home engagement session in Scottsdale, Arizona. We got to chatting about their wedding and upcoming adventures we both had planned. Luck was in the air that day and it turned out that we were both going to be in the Seattle area at the same time in the following weeks. This was super important to them because Jessica had lived in Washington for most of her adult life and really wanted wedding pictures in the Pacific Northwest with her future husband. Their intimate wedding will be later this year here in Scottsdale, but we took the opportunity to get Jessica the pictures she's always dreamed of having and creating beautiful memories during Glen’s first trip to Washington. I meet them at their Airbnb in Anacortes on a rainy cold day, but we still conquered the day hiking several trails and popping champagne! Jessica and Glen's love is so apparent when you spend time with them from the pure laughter to the sweet quiet moments they have, it was such a joy spending the day with them. It was my first time in the Northern Washington area (most of my time has been spent in the Olympic National Park region) and I must say it is beautiful! The Anacortes and Deception Pass State Park are perfect locations for a PNW elopement!

Isn't their little cabin on the lake the cutest?!

Please note this cabin is an Airbnb rental. It is important when you are eloping and you rent an Airbnb to speak with the owner if the photographer will be taking any photos on property. Most owners are okay with pictures being taken, but you need to communicate with them about what will be happening and get their permission.

Meet AJ & Celeste...

These two said their vows to each other two years ago during an intimate backyard wedding. Sadly, they did not receive many wedding photos. This lead them to me, for an adventure anniversary session in Sedona! We hiked four miles with their best hiking companions (aka Huskies), Calypso and Nova to stunning views in Red Rock country. The location was  perfect and we photographed until there was no light left. Our hike back was not a disappointment either, because we had a full moon showing us the way and a little cooler Arizona temperatures!

I want to share something Celeste wrote on social media because it completely embodies what an adventure elopement is all about. "Four years together, four years of climbing, and enjoying the views with you. This anniversary shoot was a complete representation of how I feel about you AJ. I will climb mountains, in any condition, and push myself, mentally, physically and spiritually, just to enjoying the view with you." - Celeste

I could not have put this in better words myself. Eloping in state parks, national parks and anywhere else you can adventure is not just about the breathe taking views, but also about the climb and journey together. I am so thankfully that I can create moments like these for my clients and be apart of something so beautiful in life.

Couple's Session - Phoenix, Arizona Photographer

My friends, it is important to remember that it does not take an elopement for you to have a professional photographer take beautiful photos of you and your significant other in a stunning location. Couple, proposal, engagement, and maternity sessions can be booked with me as an adventure session. On the other hand, maybe you did get married at a venue and you still want wedding photos in one of these beautiful places! You can book an adventure session as a day after or honey moon session as well. This is also a great gift idea for your partner on your one year wedding anniversary!

An adventure that starts the rest of your life..

Meet Tori and Matt, a truly adventurous couple. They moved to Phoenix from Pennsylvania several years ago. Together they are a smart power couple and lovers of the great outdoors. I couldn't help but smile behind my camera at their sweet giggles to each other.

The North Algodones Dunes are located in Southern California, and while it is typically being torn apart by off road vehicles, we had an entire day almost to ourselves in its beauty. I absolutely love my elopement couples! The memories, stories and dreams of future adventures are always awe inspiring to me. From the first look to the challenge of conquering the "trail" to breathtaking photos, elopements are like any other day in their lives together. Eloping allows the couple to start the rest of their lives together stress-free and experience a meaningful day completely their way.

Travel is like love, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. That is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.

When you're planning your elopement, it is important to understand what exactly the day will entail. For example, if you're eloping in the North Algodones Dunes in the summer months, it is very hot. You will need breaks for water and food and the proper shoes for the hot sand. The photos above give you an idea of expectations versus reality. Yes, it is beautiful and you're going to have an amazing day, but it is not easy. If you're thinking of eloping do not hesitate to ask me as your photographer to help you plan the day, it is important to know the location/trails, the limitations on permits, access within the park, the weather conditions, and tips on leaving no trace behind!

You can imagine my excitement as an avid hiker and believer in what REI provides for the outdoor folks when Matt parked on location, opened the trunk and said “So, we brought all of our hiking and camping gear and we would like to take a photo with it.” Matt explained that they were always prepared for an adventure when they were doing road trips, so they threw everything in the car even though they were prepared to spend the next couple of nights in San Diego at a hotel. Even though their packs were filled with books they're reading, rather than things needed for survival on the trail, it just reminds me of how precious it is that adventurous couples have the option to get married in their most natural state together, outdoors exploring. Outside of the experience, it also really warms my heart that couples can leave their wedding day knowing they will receive images that they would be proud to print and have on their walls.

Everyone has a story....

You have read my blogs about Smith Rock, Iceland, California and other travels, but I wanted to share where all this started.

During the Summer of 2016 the MPP team took a trip to Olympic National Park to camp and hike for three days after the Women’s KPMG Championship. During this trip we spent time car camping and hiking in the rainforest, hiking along the coast in La Push to Hole-in-the-Rock and trekking around with deer in the snowy mountains of Hurricane Ridge. We enjoyed local ciders we bought form little local nooks, watched sunsets from the coast, stopped to see the rainbow going across the clear lake and hugged trees larger than you could imagine! I can honestly say that this trip changed my whole life, it was the first tilt to many small shifts to come over the next three years. It sparked this intense desire to spend more time outdoors hiking and camping. It gave me this longing to go see the National Parks and learn more about these places and ther history. Being surrounded by this park’s natural beauty made me feel more at peace than I ever had in my life. It blossomed this wonder I already had for traveling and exploring to a full blown need.

Soon after, I learned about modern day elopements and boom another small shift! I saw a these stunning photos of couples in these massive mountains, along beautiful beaches and having these beautiful emotional ceremonies together. I enjoyed my job with the MPP team, but I was missing connection and working with couples. I decided to check this out and found a couple still looking for a photographer for their elopement during my time in Iceland. I photographed a couple from London’s intimate elopement on my first day in Iceland was hooked! I absolutely love elopements; not only because they are often in stunning places in the world like the Olympic National Park, but also to give couples a chance to have a wedding that is just what they want, stress free and a space to really share a special day together.

I hope you enjoy these images from what started it all for me!
